Pieces like this were produced by specialized factories such as Gemma, Goss, Arcadian, and Florentine. The condition is excellent, with no chips or cracks. The transfer image of the crest is clear and vivid, with light wear. The bottom displays the manufacturer logo and name. Made in England.
THE MAKERS MARK: This two-handled vase is made of fine white porcelain, which was a highly popular form of British heraldic souvenir ware during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The backstamp belonging to "Gemma" porcelain, a highly recognizable mark most famously associated with early 20th-century crested china and souvenir ware. This specific crown and shield mark containing the name "GEMMA" was used by Schmidt & Co., a prominent porcelain factory operating out of Altrohlau, Bohemia.
CITY OF MANCHESTER: The central crest image displays Manchester's traditional shield and supporters alongside the Latin motto Concilio et Labore, which translates to "By wisdom and effort" and has been used by the city since 1838.
