In VICTORIA: DEMERS to DE ROO, Jamieson evokes the first 150 years of the Diocese of Victoria with a sensitivity for the symbolic, an eye for patterns and an ear for the rhythmic repetitions of history.

The history breaks itself nicely into three distinct fifty-year periods.

1.      The first period, 1846-96, is the pioneer stage, when all the bishops were non-Canadians, largely Europeans of Belgian descent, and the diocese itself was suffragan to an American Archdiocese.

2.      The next stage, 1896-1946, saw the world change more than it had in he previous two hundred years, and this escalating pace of change became the hallmark of the Twentieth Century for the church worldwide and certainly for the diocese.

3.      The final stage, 1946-96, was remarkable if only for its quality of leadership stability - only two bishops in more than fifty years - and for the outstanding event which granted it permanent specific shape: The Second Vatican Council.
