THE WHITE ARCHER, An Eskimo Legend by James Houston, was the winner of the 1968 Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children Award!
Kungo, a twelve-year old Eskimo boy, survives the horrible night when Indians from the Land of Little Sticks kill his parents and carry off his sister. Escaping northward, he is befriended for a time by a seal hunter and then sets off to find the legendary Ittok -- the old man who could draw a huge horn bow that the strongest of men could not even bend. This is the man who will teach Kungo to become a great archer and avenge the destruction of his family. Until he is eighteen Kungo lives with Ittok and his wife, not only learning how to draw a bow and hunt but also absorbing wisdom and kindness. At last ready for his mission, carrying the great bow of Ittok, he travels to the Land of Little Sticks and terrifies the Indian camp with his awesome marksmanship. But the moment of vengeance he had long dreamed of soon turns into another, quite unexpected feeling of joy.
