THE ROCK IN THE WATER, Short Stories by Bill Conall, "is wonderful. It's happy, funny, the writing is excellent. Lay back and read awhile. Enjoy a whole island full of great characters. A great collection of short stories tied together into a community. Well done." -Mona from Goodreads.
Quadra Island, (a real island off the west coast of British Columbia) is peopled with a cast of fictional characters including Sparkle Orange, a forty-something flower child; Juniper Mallory, a cantankerous Nubian billy goat; Ragbir Sahota, war veteran and ferryman; and a collection of fiesty senior citizens sometimes referred to as The Disreputables. In all probability you will meet someone you recognize whether you live in the mountains, on the prairies, in the Maritime provinces, or even in the Big City.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Bill Conall’s novel The Promised Land: a novel of Cape Breton won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour in 2014. His earlier novel The Rock in the Water was short-listed for the same award. In the Has Been category, Bill Conall has a significant backlist. Present and former occupations include library assistant, long-haul trucker, salesman (cars, wine, trade show exhibits, commercial printing, encyclopedia, signage), road musician, printer, fork lift operator, bartender, recording artist, and writer. Bill lives on the back side of Murray Mountain in Cape Breton with artist Rosemary McLean. Not completely ‘back-to-the-land’ but close, they grow vegetables, harvest wild things from the forest and cut their own firewood.
