The Queen Mother 80th Birthday Celebration Crown Coin 4th August 1980 crown coin was issued to celebrate the Eightieth birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (the mother of Queen Elizabeth II) on 4th August 1980. Coin is presented in a Midland Bank fold-open holder. Photographs are of the actual coin for sale. Very Good Condition.

  • Obverse: Crowned and draped young bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (effigy known as the "Second Portrait", by Arnold Machin).
  • Reverse: The reverse of the coin, designed by Professor Richard Guyatt, features within a beaded circle the portrait of the Queen Mother facing to the left, surrounded by a radiating pattern of bows and rampant (upright) lions - a pun on her maiden name Bowes-Lyon.

DID YOU KNOW? At the time of decimalisation in 1971, the United Kingdom Crown coin (equal to 5 shillings) was redenominated as a 25p coin and pieces struck prior to 1990 and continue to be legal tender for that amount. Due to the official face value (which is not shown anywhere on the coin), some catalogues list this coin as "25 New Pence".
