THE HALIFAX PUBLIC GARDENS, is the remarkable story of the 6.48 hectares (16 acres) of extraordinary horticultural beauty, and the larger than life characters who conceived, nurtured and defended them against the despoiling hayseed economics of petty Nova Scotian politicians.

The fascination for gardens is universal. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, it is almost an obsession. Practically the first thing the British did when they established a military garrison here in 1749 was to start digging. By the time Victoria became Queen, in 1837, the town had already taken the first tentative step in creating what has become a Canadian national treasure, the Halifax Public Gardens.

The fact that the Gardens survive today as very much a public institution is a tribute to the idealism of their civic-minded Victorian creators and the brilliance and dedication of an Irish immigrant, Richard Power, who turned their dream into stunning reality.
