DID YOU KNOW? The Constitution Act, 1867 and the Constitution Act, 1982 are the two key written documents that form the foundation of Canada's government and its powers. The Constitution Act, 1867 established the basic structure of Canada's government, divided powers between federal and provincial levels, and created the Senate, House of Commons, and provincial legislatures. The Constitution Act, 1982 patriated the constitution from the UK, added the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, outlined Aboriginal rights, and created a procedure for amending the constitution.
