THE BIG DIPPER ROUTE, by Danny Bereza, is a true story where we see the inexperienced pilot develop as a person through solving the problems he encounters, and we gain a unique insight into the life of those days, as well as experiencing through his eyes, all the beauty and dangers of the Arctic environment.
What do you do if you’re flying through fog over an icy ocean, the nearest land is 200 miles away and your fuel gauges are hovering near zero? Or you’ve ben ordered to fly a dying native Indian to hospital but he’s begging you to take him back to his beloved wilderness to die in peace? Or you’re marooned alone in minus 40-degree temperatures with a plane that won’t fly, no radio, and the nearest help a thousand miles away? These are just a few of the problems that face the young Danny Bereza in his new job flying a DC-3 over the ‘Big Dipper Route’ in the wilds of the Arctic.
