Mid-Century Japanese Carved Trinket Bowl, Tobacco Jar or Lidded-Vanity Box, Made from Katsura or Yamazakura Native Wood to hold loose items on a dresser or desk. The condition appears to be excellent, with only the slightest handling. Made in Japan.
This vintage Japanese hand-carved treenware container is an excellent example of mid-century folk art, likely produced as a souvenir or export piece between the 1940s and 1960s. Its lid features distinct line carvings depicting Mount Fuji, a traditional pagoda or house, and pine trees along a shoreline, all framed by a textured geometric border. This exact style of vintage Japanese treenware was typically made from solid Japanese Katsura wood (Japanese Judas-tree) or Yamazakura (native mountain cherry wood).ย
DID YOU KNOW? Japanese treenware encompasses a rich tradition of small, handcrafted, or turned wooden household objects that blend functional simplicity with elegant artistry. These items, ranging from precision-turned tea caddies and lidded boxes to durable bowls, utensils, and kiridame (traditional food preparation trays), highlight the natural beauty and texture of the wood grain.
