DID YOU KNOW? Popularized during the 1950s and 1960s, these decorative pieces feature a solid copper base coated with vibrant, vitreous glass enamels. The distinctive swirl pattern in the center was typically achieved through liquid or powder glass scrolling techniques, where artists dragged a stylus or tool through the molten enamel while it was fired in a kiln.

MEAB COMPANY HISTORY: The signature confirms this piece was made by Meab Enamels, a historic Irish artisan studio founded in the 1960s by craftswoman Meab O'Neill in County Westmeath. One of the most fascinating aspects of Meab's vintage work is its early focus on sustainability, as she pioneered an eco-friendly method by sourcing recycled copper from old water cylinders. The base copper was hand-cut and hammered into shape before being decorated using a specialized "open fire" kiln technique. While the enamel powders were molten over the open flame, she would manually manipulate and slide the hot glass using a stylus tool to achieve the distinctive, fluid arabesque motifs. The stylized stamp "Handmade in the Republic of Ireland".
