JUDAS IN KILKENNY, is Theresa Lennon-Blunt's memoirs of her growing up years in Kilkenny Ireland, were indeed the best of times and the worst of times,
Blighted by an alcoholic mother and proud but stern father. In the opening chapter, after discovering her mother is drinker, Blunt hopes to win redemption for her by filling up the coffers of the church and depleting its seemingly endless supply of candles. To no avail. One year and a million novenas later she found that not one of her prayers had been answered.
Blunts descriptive and beautifully written book about a young girl coming of age, captures a bleak home life filled with sadness, disappointment and turmoil where she receives little recognition and praise. The book, however, is wonderfully balanced by the many experiences and escapades with friends over holidays, weekends and special occasions. Her rich narrative, exquisite use of metaphor and ability to capture details from the past have resulted in a book full of vivid, visual images that take the reader back to her time and place.
