JOHN CLARE & PICTURESQUE LANDSCAPE, by Timothy Brownlow, is a study that demonstrates how John Clare, starting like Wordsworth from a passionate involvement with landscape, establishes a unique literary perspective with a vitality equal to that of Wroesworth and with a detail which Wordsworth never attempted.
It has often been remarked how poets such as Wordsworth and Coleridge absorbed eighteeth-century topographical and picturesque traditions in the process of developing their own styles. Because of his impoverished rural background, John Clare perceived these traditions rather differently.
Dr. Brownlow describes Clare's experiments in poetic perspective -the conversion, as it were, of the traditional bird's-eye view into a beetle's-eye view - and goes on to examine Clare's keen interest in natural history and his skilful solution of problems encountered in descriptive poetry.
