IN SUNNY ITALY, Wartime Cartoons, was an exhibit by The Imperial War Museum of London, of cartoons to make known the life of the Canadian soldiers of the Eighth Army from an unusual angle: that of humorous cartoons.
Most of the cartoons collected here were born from the pens of two journalists, the British W.J.P. Jones (Jon) and the Canadian William "Bing" Coughlin. For both of them, the inspiration for the creation of these cartoons came from situations or episodes that really happened during the war period. Then, as now, cartoons and caricatures were a way to jokingly make fun of contingent situations and precisely in those terrible moments the humor and irony of cartoons on military life and its iron disciplines often helped to ease the tension, as if they wanted to say: -Things are so bad that we just have to laugh!
