HOMEFIELD, Nine Writers at Bat, Edited by John Douglas Marshall, is a star-studded collection of baseball stories, by some famous writers including Sherman Alexie, Lynda Barry, John Owen, and Larry Colton, all writing their own reflections on baseball.
"This 1997 essay collection Home Field: Nine Writers at Bat presents thoughtful, often funny takes on all kinds of teams and leagues from those pre-MLB years: minor leagues, Little League, American Legion ball, beer leagues, and more, as well as the first sputtering of major-league baseball in Seattle. My favorite pieces include that one about Seattle–”The Bad Old Years” by John Owen– and “Smells Like Team Spirit: Portrait of a Rank Season,” Holly Morris’s hilarious account of an all-women’s team who defines winning in ways that have nothing to do with the number of runs scored. Home Field has no real duds among its pages, although Sherman Alexie’s lengthy digression about the variations of his lust for white women and tribal women hasn’t aged particularly well. If you can find a copy of Home Field, it’s well worth a baseball fan’s time." -Reviewed by Gary Anderson on Goodreads.
