FROM CAPTIVE TO PRIESTHOOD, by Gerhard Hartmann, is his own stories of life escaping from a Russian labour camp, to his life in Canada offering sacraments behind the alter.
Gerhard never lost his spirit and kindly sense of houour. As Father Gary says, "Without God, I couldn't do it - when he chooses you, you can't get away." Gerhard Hartmann has served as priest in numerous communities on Vancouver Island since his ordination in 1976. He died in 2015.
In February 2020, a law suit alleged the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria was vicariously liable for her abuse [by Father Hartmann], saying it was negligent and failed in its duties to protect parishioners from harm. The lawsuit was settled out of court earlier this month on undisclosed terms, but S.P. said the resolution is "satisfactory to all parties."
Bishop Gary Gordon provided a written statement addressing the settlement on behalf of the diocese. "The Diocese of Victoria is committed to responding fairly and compassionately to victims of sexual abuse. We recognize that this information may be difficult for people to hear but may also be an opportunity for other victim-survivors to come forward so that in the light of truth, there may be healing and justice," Gordon said.
