ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alan Maitland was a Canadian radio broadcaster. Veteran CBC announcer and award winning broadcaster Alan Maitland, popularly known as Fireside Al and Front Porch Al, has delighted listeners across the country with his inimitable storytelling. He was a longtime host for CBC Radio, starting as an announcer in 1947 and was later cohost of As It Happens from 1974 to 1993. In 1980 he and then co-host Barbara Frum shared and ACTRA Award for Best Public Affairs Broadcasters. He died in Vancouver, BC, on February 11, 1999.
