CUSHLA, GYPSY SPIRIT, by Elizabeth Radmore, is the story of no work in Ireland in the 1950s, so the entire McKenna family was sailing to Canada in response to promises of a better future, as told by the young daughter.

Based on events from the author's own childhood, Cushla, Gypsy Spirit, by Elizabeth Radmore, brings to life the joys and hardships that many immigrants to Canada faced after the Second World War. It picks up where CUSHLA, MEMOIRS OF A RELUCTANT GYPSY GIRL, the authors first novel, leaves off.

Kathleen and her father had lived in an Irish gypsy camp for three months while he searched for work. Just before sailing to Canada, Nora, the gypsy woman, gives Kathleen a talisman for protection, but when faced with a strange school, bullying classmates, and financial hardship, Kathleen wonders if it will be enough to see her gypsy spirit through. Then love enters her heart, and she's reminded of the strength that lies within her.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Elizabeth Radmore was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and immigrated to Canada in 1951 with her parents, Molly and James McKnight, and her two brothers, James and George. Her father was originally destined for Leduc, Alberta, but when he stopped in Ottawa to see his sister-in-law, Jean Potter, a builder, whom he met in a bar, offered him a job. As he had a young family on the verge of joining him in Canada, he felt the wiser choice was to accept the offer, rather than continue to Alberta and an uncertain future.
