I only knew “Hap” for a short time on the Continent after ‘D’ Day. (He was shot down by anti-aircraft fire in 1944.) This was after a very successful tour in Malta, Sicily and Italy, where he was awarded a DFC and Bar for gallantry in pressing home his attacks, often in the face of superior odds.
