A LIFE OF POETRY, by Gordon Whitney, is a collection of poems by a person who's been writing since 1962, when one of his students asked him, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you write poetry?โ€

"So in the following weeks, I did. When I handed over my poems to Avo for his perusal, he suggested we start a poetry magazine. We advertised for students to come forward with their poetry. Avo named our magazine, The Juggler. It thrived for five years, producing five annual editions. I also encouraged the head of the English department, Ed Barton, to try his hand at writing poetry. Avo and I were fascinated by Edโ€™s poems, and we included them in, The Juggler, too.Since those early days sponsoring the Gladstone poetry club, I have spent many happy hours reading other poets and writing my own poems. Now I am ninety-six years old, and I am still writing poems. Thank you, Avo, for inspiring all of us would-be poets!" -Gordon Whitney.
