1998 (1873-) Canadian 8-Coin Proof Double Dollar Set: RCMP MOUNTED POLICE 125th Anniversary Silver Dollar. Packaged in an elegant book-style green-leather case, with removable lens, Info card, COA and original RCM outer cardboard box. All in excellent condition with possible slight toning to silver coins.

This 1998 silver proof set features both the commemorative silver dollar and the aureate dollar, depicting the common loon, and commemorates the 125th Anniversary of the founding of the North-West Mounted Police.

At the time of confederation in 1867, Canada consisted of only four eastern provinces. In 1870, the government acquired a huge expanse of land from the Hudson’s Bay Company. Plans to open the region to settlement required the suppression of the whiskey trade and the establishment of peaceful relations with the Native peoples. In May 1873, the North-West Mounted Police was created to bring law, order and Canadian authority to the western frontier. The reverse of the coin features a mounted member of that early force which, in 1920, was transformed into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

All coin composition, except the nickel and penny, are 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper.
